Tottenham could make a big-money move for Sporting Lisbon attacker Pedro Goncalves at the end of the season, according to reports.

The 24-year-old gained worldwide attention after scoring an incredible 46-yard goal against Arsenal in the Europa League, before his team knocked the Premier League leaders out on penalties.

Liverpool and Manchester United have also been linked with moves for Goncalves, so there is certainly no shortage of interest in his signature.

Spurs’ top priority this summer will no doubt be to appoint a new permanent manager after they parted ways with Antonio Conte in March, as well as sorting out club captain Harry Kane’s future.

However, new signings are just as important if they want to challenge for trophies next season, so Daniel Levy also has a keen eye on the transfer market.

Since joining Sporting in 2020, Goncalves has made 120 appearances for the Portuguese giants, scoring 56 goals and making 31 assists in the process – giving him an outstanding average of 0.73 goal contributions per match.

A versatile player, he has the ability to play as an attacking midfielder or as a winger on either flank, so he could potentially provide quality cover in several positions for Tottenham next season.

Spurs seem to have lacked a cutting edge in attack this season, despite Kane once again being in excellent goal-scoring form. So, a move for Goncalves would be a logical move from Levy and co.

Indeed, Heung-min Son has been a shadow of his former self this term, while summer signing Richarlison has failed to live up to his £60m price tag so far.

Dejan Kulusevski has put in some solid performances but has still only scored 2 Premier League goals.

As a result, Tottenham currently find themselves in a disappointing fifth place in the table and look unlikely to qualify for the Champions League – although they aren’t out of the race just yet.

If they want to improve on that next season, Spurs will need to make new additions, and according to 90Min, they have sent scouts to watch Goncalves in recent months ahead of a potential big-money approach.

The London club have already done business with Sporting recently, too, with Pedro Porro making the switch to Spurs in January.

But if Tottenham do move for the talented player, he certainly won’t come cheap.

The Portugal international currently has a release clause worth around £70 million and as the north Londoners learned with the Porro deal, Sporting won’t budge on their valuation easily.

With that in mind, Spurs will have to put their hands in their pockets to get a deal for Goncalves done, but if he can continue his current form in the Premier League, he would be worth every penny.
