Tottenham Hotspur could ‘knock on the door’ for Leicester City attacking midfielder James Maddison in January if the Foxes are unable to turn their season around, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Managing director Fabio Paratici oversaw a busy summer transfer window, as he helped bolster Antonio Conte’s squad with over £150 million worth of talent, but more money could soon be spent.

What is the latest on Maddison?

It was reported, following the end of the 2021-22 campaign, that Spurs were ‘seriously considering’ a move for the 25-year-old.

Despite an influx of talent in the window, Conte was understood to want a more creative presence in his side prior to the deadline, but the club could not complete a deal.

Newcastle United pushed hard for the signature of Maddison too, seeing multiple bids for the one-cap England international rejected, the largest of which reached £50 million.

According to Football Insider, the Magpies are plotting to move again for Maddison once the winter window opens at the turn of the year.

Since the transfer deadline earlier this month, pundit Ian Wright has claimed that Maddison – who has previously been described as ‘world class’ – wanted to leave.

What has Jones said on the situation?

Jones believes that the situation Leicester are in come January will be decisive in what other clubs choose to do regarding Maddison.

The journalist claims the Foxes’ next clash with Nottingham Forest could be a pivotal moment and that the likes of Tottenham could try and sign their talisman again.

When asked about Leicester, Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “They’ve got a big game on Monday and they’ll be looking to turn around their season. If they can’t do that, then I think there’ll be a few clubs, probably including Tottenham, knocking on the door in January.”

Do Spurs need Maddison?

The former Norwich City man has made a fast start to the 2022-23 season, scoring three times in seven Premier League appearances, despite his side sitting bottom of the Premier League.

Last season saw Maddison bag 18 goals and 12 assists in all competitions, taking his career total to an impressive 71 strikes.

However, Conte’s side are not in dire need of help in attack having scored 18 goals in the top-flight this season, a total only beaten by Manchester City.

Harry Kane and Heung-min Son have scored nine between them while Dejan Kulusevski and Ivan Perisic have contributed five assists.

Maddison is a very exciting player and would no doubt be a welcome addition at Hotspur Way, but he may well be a luxury rather than a necessity.
