Tottenham Hotspur have now been told they will need to offer around £85m if they are to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona in the summer.

Since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou last summer, Spurs have seen several new faces come through the doors at Hotspur Way.

And the trust put in the Australian by Daniel Levy is certainly paying off as we look to earn ourselves a spot in next season’s Champions League.

Tottenham interested in Frenkie de Jong

Earlier in the week, it was claimed Spurs had put forward a surprise £51m offer for the Dutch midfielder as his future at the Nou Camp remains under speculation.

However, reports from Spain are now suggesting it will take considerably more to prise the 26-year-old away from Barcelona.

It has to be noted that the report claims Barca are still trying to get De Jong to ink a new deal which would see his wages reduced.

But if talks over a new deal are not to progress, then the Spanish giants would ‘open the doors’ to offers of €100m (£85m).

Frenkie de Jong salary

The report does suggest Barcelona are trying to reduce De Jong’s current wages which Capology claim are in the region of £938k-per-week with bonuses.

It is hard to imagine any potential suitor would be willing to come anywhere near those current wages which he is believed to be earning at Barcelona.

Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Manchester United are some of the other clubs which the report claims are also keen on the 26-year-old.

However, £85m would smash our club record fee for a player and you do have to question whether he is a player who would massively strengthen our side.

With the likes of Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr and James Maddison running our midfield, it is probably one of our strongest positions.

Heung-min Son is coming up to 32 years of age in the summer and his long-term replacement is certainly much more worthy of breaking our transfer record for than a new central midfielder.
