Tottenham Hotspur target Sofyan Amrabat is ‘very important’ for Morocco but is quite similar to Antonio Conte’s current options, according to The Guardian’s Ed Aarons.

Amrabat was linked with a move to Hotspur Way last January before he ultimately ended up staying put at Fiorentina, yet Spurs are reportedly contemplating reviving their interest in him.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news – Sofyan Amrabat

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that Amrabat was ‘waiting’ for Tottenham and that he wanted to make the move in the previous winter transfer window.

However, the capital club ended up signing Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus instead and then snapped up Yves Bissouma from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer.

Bissouma has struggled to find his best form for Tottenham, though, and Italian outlet La Repubblica has reported that the North London outfit are ‘ready’ to pursue Amrabat once again.

The 26-year-old’s £30,000-per-week contract is due to expire in 2024, although Fiorentina have the option to extend his stay by a further 12 months.

What has Aarons said about Amrabat?

In an interview with GiveMeSport, Aarons said: “I think, potentially, he’s a little bit what they’ve already got in a way.

“I think a lot of Tottenham fans want them to try and get a more creative midfielder, but in that system, it’s hard to have someone like that, you need kind of two pivots.

“But he’s really good at that, he’s got loads of experience as well. I think I remember seeing him much earlier in his career at a youth tournament, and it seems like he’s been around for ages.

“Obviously, his older brother Nordin Amrabat was at Watford for a bit as well, but he’s very important for Morocco with the tempo that they try to play under the new manager.”

Would Amrabat be a good signing?

Amrabat won many plaudits for his outstanding displays against both Croatia and Belgium in Group F of the World Cup, and he has also caught the eye at club level.

As per FBref, the 6 foot ace has ranked in the 97th percentile for progressive passes, 92nd for blocks, and the 89th for attempted passes amongst his positional peers over the last year.

Adept at breaking up opposition attacks before kickstarting ones of his own, Amrabat could prove to be a valuable asset for Tottenham.

Only time will tell if Conte does decide to make a formal offer for Amrabat this time around, although the midfielder is unlikely to be short of potential suitors following his performances in Qatar.
