Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs showing keen interest in signing Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov.
According to the Sunday People (page 49), Spurs are tracking the ‘elegant’ Uzbekistan defender who has been a ‘revelation’ in France.
Tottenham could face competition from Premier League rivals Newcastle United for the 20-year-old defender, who has already made 16 appearances for the national team.
He has made it onto Tottenham’s transfer shortlist, and they would need to pay around £25 million to secure his services.
Khusanov is a calm and composed ball-playing defender who has all the attributes of a future top-class player.
Ange Postecoglou has stressed the importance of signing new players in January, and he could be willing to sign a new centre-back.
Cristian Romero is expected to be out for a long time, and Micky van de Ven is also currently injured.
The problem has been exacerbated after Ben Davies picked up an injury as well, which has left Postecoglou short of options at the back.
Radu Dragusin remains the only proper centre-back who is fit at the moment.
Postecoglou used Archie Gray alongside him at Rangers as Spurs secured a 1-1 draw in the Europa League in midweek.
If they lose any more defenders, the defence could be really stretched, forcing Postecoglou to look for another centre-back in January.
However, it would be difficult to lure Khusanov away from Lens during the middle of the season.
He has made 13 appearances in Ligue 1 this season, recording 4.3 clearances per game.
