Tottenham in pole position to sign Hull City's Jaden Philogene

Hull City have a star on their hands, but that star could be destined for a return to the Premier League, but not the one that he arrived from.

Jaden Philogene has been a breathtaking player this season. Liam Rosenior has been able to maximise his potential, and justify the seven-figure price tag that the club paid for him in the summer.

The winger has only played in 20 games this season, but his output in those matches has been astonishing.

Hull are currently just inside the play-off spots, and are three points ahead of seventh-placed Norwich City, who are on 52 points. Both sides have played 34 games this season.

Philogene will be hoping that he can help his team to a successful play-off run, but he may not be there to see the fruits of his labour once the 2024/25 campaign starts as a couple of clubs, that are challenging for Champions League positions, have their eye on the 22-year-old, and reports have suggested that there is one that is leading the race.

Tottenham in pole position to sign Jaden Philogene from Hull City

Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race to sign the Hull star in the summer transfer window, according to TEAMtalk.

The winger joined the Tigers from Aston Villa in the summer in a deal worth £5 million. Included in that deal was a buy-back clause worth £15 million, as per TEAMtalk, but offers above that price point from clubs other than Villa would force them to try and match those higher bids in order to bring Philogene back to Villa Park.

Hull's vice-chairman Tan Kesler confirmed this in September, and added that the buy-back clause would only be activated if the Tigers were to be promoted to the Premier League.

Spurs are said to have made regular checks on the 22-year-old throughout the season, and he is said to be exactly what Ange Postecoglu wants in that position.

TEAMtalk added that the London-based club had looked at other options, like Antonio Nusa, from Club Brugge, and PSV Johan Bakayoko, but they now see the Hull player as their number one option.

Jaden Philogene is ready for a Premier League move

A return to Villa, or a move down to London, would suit the winger well. The current positions of both clubs under Unai Emery and Postecoglu, respectively, would mean that Philogene wouldn't need to be an instant hit. There would be enough quality in front of him, in both teams, to allow him to go under the radar and develop, rather than being thrust straight into the limelight as he may have been in years past.

Spurs, for example, fought to bring in Radu Dragusin in the January transfer window, and yet he's barely played for them since arriving from Italian side Genoa. He's being allowed to develop and learn the system that the manager wants him to play in, and that would be the case for the 22-year-old too, no matter which of the two sides he joined.

Now, if, for whatever reason, a team that was slightly lower down the top flight of English football decided to put in a bid that neither Spurs or Villa wanted to match, Philogene would be able to find his feet. But it may be more of a bumpy ride for him.

He should favour a move to one of the top up-and-coming clubs in the Premier League, not only because his talents merits it, but also because it would allow him to become the best version of himself.
