Sky Sports have reported that Tottenham Hotspur have been presented with a golden opportunity to sign Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane on a free transfer this summer. Yet, for all the excitement this might bring Spurs fans, the move is not without complications—namely, the player’s salary expectations and fierce competition from rivals Arsenal.
The 29-year-old is set to become a free agent at the end of next month after failing to reach an agreement with Bayern Munich over a contract renewal. “Bayern have been unable to agree a new contract with Sane, who has been offered a new three-year deal on a reduced salary having recently appointed super-agent Pini Zahavi to act on his behalf.”
That Zahavi is involved suggests Sane is exploring his options thoroughly, aware that his next deal could be his last major contract. His record speaks for itself—83 goal contributions in 139 Premier League games for Manchester City, including two league titles. For Spurs, a player of that pedigree on a free represents rare value.

With both Arsenal and Tottenham reportedly contacted about a potential deal, the North London battle lines are being drawn.
Sane’s previous relationship with Mikel Arteta, dating back to their shared time under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, may give Arsenal an emotional edge. But Tottenham’s strong relationship with Bayern, especially following the transfers of Harry Kane and Eric Dier, cannot be overlooked.
Spurs do not traditionally hand out monster wages. “Sane salary could present a problem for Tottenham.” Even with a projected £100m boost from Champions League qualification, the north London club remains cautious.
Bayern’s final offer—£160,000-a-week—was rejected, and Sane may seek a package exceeding what Spurs currently offer their top earner, Son Heung-min (£190,000-a-week). That financial balancing act could become the defining factor in whether or not this deal crosses the line.
With 13 goals and six assists in 45 appearances this season, Sane remains a potent threat. His ability to operate on either wing is exactly the kind of tactical versatility Spurs are seeking. “His ability to play on either flank also makes the German an attractive proposition for a Tottenham side who are on the hunt for fresh attacking talent this summer.”
Should he land at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, his debut could come full circle—against Bayern Munich in a pre-season clash. It would be a fitting stage to begin what could be a compelling new chapter.
From a Tottenham fan’s perspective, this potential move is one of those rare moments that brings genuine hope ahead of a new campaign. Signing a player of Leroy Sane’s calibre for free is the sort of headline-grabbing business Spurs fans have long craved—especially as the club gears up for a return to the Champions League.
The reality, however, is that salary could kill the dream. It’s no secret that Spurs operate under stricter financial constraints than many of their Big Six peers. But this summer feels different. There’s renewed optimism under Ange Postecoglou and the notion of Sane lining up alongside Son and Maddison is mouth-watering.
Some fans will be concerned about Arsenal’s interest. The Gunners have more financial muscle and a connection through Arteta. But Spurs have their own cards to play: guaranteed game time, a manager with an attacking philosophy, and a squad that’s finally growing into its identity.
If Spurs can get creative with bonuses and structure a deal cleverly, this could be a season-defining signing. A marquee name like Sane would signal serious intent—not just for a top-four finish but for something greater.
