Tottenham Hotspur’s first Champions League participation since 2019/20 commences at home versus an in-form Olympique Marseille on Wednesday.

Drawn together with Eintracht Frankfurt, Sporting CP and Marseille, Spurs are deemed top favourites to reach the knock-outs for the fourth time running.

Experienced European campaigner Antonio Conte is ready for another Champions League season with a fourth different club after navigating Tottenham to the Premier League fourth-place finish in 2021/22.

However, the Italian manager has never progressed beyond the Champions League group phase as a manager and will be heavily motivated to buck that trend this term.

Following a six-match unbeaten start to the new Premier League season (W4, D2), Tottenham will meet Marseille in a confident mood, but their opponents are also flying high.

Led by new boss Igor Tudor, Les Olympiens have racked up five wins from their opening six Ligue 1 fixtures (D1), including four in a row, and should feel compelled to fight Spurs for a top place in Group D.

The arrivals of Alexis Sanchez, Jonathan Clauss and Nuno Tavares have ensured strength in depth as the French heavyweights aim to progress from the Champions League group stages for the first time since 2011/12.

Match Preview

Tottenham Hotspur

Despite lamenting the lowest win ratio of all English clubs to have taken part in 20+ Champions League matches (44%), Tottenham have reached the competition’s knock-outs in four of their previous five campaigns.

Additionally, Spurs had won four consecutive home games against French visitors in major European competitions before losing to Monaco in their most recent such fixture back in 2016.

Worryingly for Conte, the Londoners have picked up just one victory in their five previous matchday-one group stage outings (D2 L2), highlighting Tottenham’s insecurity in European action.

Olympique Marseille

Marseille’s return to the Champions League group phase following a season-long absence puts Tudor in front of a mammoth task as his men have suffered 14 defeats in their last 15 matches in the competition (W1).

With Sanchez and Dimitri Payet both sidelined, the Ligue 1 side will be concerned about their hopes of troubling the scoreboard after firing blanks nine times in their last 15 Champions League encounters.

Resilience at the back could then prove key to Marseille’s bid to defy a thoroughly underwhelming 13-game record against English adversaries in Europe’s most prestigious club competition (W1, D2, L10).

Tottenham Hotspur vs Olympique Marseille Prediction

An impressive run of three consecutive clean sheets in the build-up to this clash suggests Marseille could give Harry Kane and Son Heung-min a hard time.

However, we back Tottenham to maintain their three-game winning streak at home this season and set the pulse for a potentially group-winning campaign.
