Tottenham Hotspur Vs Newcastle United Preview: Talking Tactics, Team News, Predicted Lineups & Key Men

Tottenham Hotspur will host Newcastle United on Sunday, hoping to continue their excellent run of form. The Lilywhites are coming on the back of two consecutive wins in all competitions. However, Jose Mourinho’s men are still looking for their first home win of the campaign, after getting beaten by Everton in their opening fixture.

Newcastle United, on the other hand, inflicted a massive 7-0 defeat on Morecambe in the EFL Cup in midweek. But, the Magpies have lost their last Premier League match to Brighton & Hove Albion, with manager Steve Bruce desperate for a turnaround.

Tottenham Hotspur Vs Newcastle United Tactical Preview

Talking Tactics

Tottenham Hotspur

Mourino is likely to persist with his tried and tested 4-2-3-1 formation, with Harry Winks operating in the deepest midfield role. Tottenham usually tend to employ a wide-oriented approach when attacking the opposition, although Newcastle United should ideally be aware of accurate long balls from the back, especially from the left-hand side.

Newcastle United

Newcastle United should employ a 4-4-2, with two banks of four covering goalkeeper Karl Darlow. The Magpies will be relying on counter-attacks, though the potential absence of Allan Saint-Maximin serves as a significant blow for Steve Bruce. NUFC must dominate the midfield if they are to have any hopes of creating a sustainable source of chance creation.

Team News

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham are definitely missing out on the services of new signing Gareth Bale, who is still suffering from an injury, along with Japhet Tanganga. Another new arrival in Sergio Reguilon is also a doubt and will not start, with Mourinho mainly expected to revert the key changes he made during the midweek clash against Shkendija.

Probable Lineup (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Doherty, Sanchez, Dier, Davies; Winks, Hojbjerg; Lucas, Lo Celso, Son; Kane.

Newcastle United

Bruce is dealing with a major injury crisis at the moment with key players like Martin Dubravka, Paul Dummett and Dwight Gayle all sidelined. Saint-Maximin and Jamal Lewis, meanwhile, are doubts heading into this game, though we expect the latter to make the starting eleven on Sunday. Much like Spurs, Newcastle are also expected to revert the changes they made in the midweek cup game against Morecambe.

Predicted Lineup (4-2-3-1): Darlow; Manquillo, Lascelles, Fernandez, Lewis; Hendrick, Hayden, Shelvey, Almiron; Carroll, Wilson.

Key Men

Tottenham Hotspur

Son Heung-Min is by far the most in-form player heading into this encounter. The South Korean international had scored four goals in the win over Southampton while also starring in the midweek victory against Shkendija. Newcastle United must prevent him from influencing the game if they are to have any chances of salvaging anything from this game.

Newcastle United

For the Magpies, new signing Callum Wilson will be key. The ex-Bournemouth striker has started his NUFC career on a positive note, and as Newcastle look to play on the counter, his sharpness and finishing qualities could go a long way in shaping their fate in this encounter.
