Tottenham Hotspur will welcome Eintracht Frankfurt to north London in an all-important Champions League Group D tie on Wednesday night.

Antonio Conte’s men were not at their best in the reverse tie at the Deutsche Bank Park, where they were held to a goalless draw.

The tepid draw means both clubs will enter Wednesday’s showdown level on four points, with Spurs only above their German opponents on goal difference.

Conte felt the draw was harsh and his side deserved much more from the game, but tomorrow’s tie will present the Lilywhites another chance to exert dominance over the Europa League champions.

Spurs’ defence held firm to repel the relentless Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend after Harry Kane put them ahead from a Heung-min Son cross in the first half.

They will now switch their attention to their high-stakes fixture, looking to use their home advantage against a Frankfurt team that will head into the tie after suffering defeat in their last match.

Oliver Glasner’s side fell to a shocking defeat at the hands of bottom-placed VFL Bochum in the Bundesliga last weekend.

Die Adler were overrun in the second half, conceding three goals in the last 20 minutes of the game in Bochum’s first win and clean sheet of the season.

It was only Frankfurt’s third league defeat this season and their biggest since they were thumped 6-1 by the reigning champions Bayern Munich on opening day.

They will be looking to put that aberration behind them in north London, but the odds are stacked against them as Spurs have won nine of their last 11 home games in the Champions League group stage (L2), including each of the previous three.

Match Preview

Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs’ recent performances and results have overshadowed their solid start to the season, in which they were unbeaten in their first ten games in all competitions.

They laboured to victory over Brighton despite enduring a very challenging week following the passing of their fitness coach Gian Piero Ventrone.

However, anything other than maximum points from Wednesday’s encounter will heap pressure on themselves to treat their final two matches as must-wins because their spot in the knockout stage will hinge on it.

Spurs have failed to score in their last two Champions League games. The last time they went three consecutive games without scoring in a European competition was in March-April 2011, during the Champions League knockout phase.

They need to improve on their toothless displays in Frankfurt and Lisbon if they are to get a result, but their record against German sides will pose a concern as they are winless in their last five matches against Bundesliga teams (D1 L4).

Eintracht Frankfurt

Frankfurt’s first Champions League journey since they were finalists in 1960 has had its ups and downs. Their 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture against Spurs was a stark contrast from their first two matches.

They were humbled 3-0 at home to Sporting Lisbon in their opening game but responded well with a 1-0 win away to Olympique Marseille.

Despite their inconsistency, they could go top of the group with a win against Spurs if results go their way, but no German side has ever won their first two away games in the competition.
