This Sunday afternoon, as part of Sky Sports Super Sunday, Tottenham Hotspur will host Chelsea, for match day fifteen of the 24/25 Premier League season.
For all of the wrong reasons, this fixture last season lives long in the memories. Coming into the game with eight wins and two draws from their opening ten games, Spurs came out of this game with a 4-1 loss, Destiny Udogie + Cristian Romero suspended, and Micky van de Ven + James Maddison out with medium term injuries. Apart from that, though, great night.
Spurs come into this game having picked up just one point from their previous two league outings, having beaten Manchester City 4-0 in the previous league outing. They have also drawn at home to Roma in that time, so it is three games without a win in all competitions.
Meanwhile today’s visitors, Chelsea, come into the game second in the league, and absolutely full of confidence, particularly going forward. Cole Palmer has scored nine goals, provided six assists, and created 11 big chances in 14 league outings so far this season. The idea of him threading through balls to Nicolas Jackson, who has scored eight goals in 13 games – is a pretty petrifying thought.
For the task at hand, Ange Postecoglu has gone with the following XI; Forster; Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Udogie; Kulusevski, Bissouma, Sarr; Johnnson, Solanke, Son.
The bench consists of; Austin, Spence, Dragusin, Reguilon, Gray, Bergvall, Maddison, Werner, and Lanskhear.
There have been big shockwaves at the news of both first choice central defenders starting. It is van de Ven's first appearance since the Carabao Cup win over Manchester City, whilst for Romero, it is his first game (in a Spurs shirt) since the defeat at home to Ipswich Town.
His opposite number, Enzo Maresca, has opted for; Sanchez; Caicedo, Badiashile, Colwill, Cucurella; Lavia, Enzo; Neto, Palmer, Sancho; Jackson. We are likely to see Caicedo invert into midfield when Chelsea have the ball. After all the links with Neto to Spurs over the years, wouldn't it be typical if he scores today.
The defeat to Chelsea last year sparked a tough period for Spurs, having had a fantastic run before that. Let’s hope the complete opposite happens here, with a win sparking a great run of form, after a really poor one up until now.
