With the Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg signing pretty much in the bag, the Lilywhites have prioritised the addition of a back-up striker for Harry Kane, with the Bournemouth star emerging as the top target. The Cherries value Wilson around £20 million, but Tottenham are confident of reaching a deal for a lower price.

Do Tottenham need a new striker?

Tottenham have been unusually ineffective in their pursuit of a new striker over a couple of years. Following the departure of the ageing Fernando Llorente, they haven’t really been able to sign a proper alternative for Kane. Instead, they have relied on the services of players like Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura and Dele Alli.

Except for Son, none of them has been able to live to the billing. That is why the injury of the South Korean international put Spurs on a spot of bother, especially with the offensive duo of Alli and Moura simply lacking the end product to fill in the shoes of any of those two individuals.

It is, in fact, a fair argument that the Lilywhites got lucky with the suspension of football due to Coronavirus as it allowed both Son and Kane to recover from their injuries, and it was evident in their performances during the restart period as Jose Mourinho’s men ended the campaign on a strong note and secured European football.

Callum Wilson: A bargain for Mourinho?

On paper, Wilson is arguably the best striker among the relegated players in the Premier League this season. The Englishman has netted eight goals for the Cherries and also has bags of experience, having featured in 126 Premier League matches throughout his career. He has even won four caps for the English national team.

On the flip side, however, it is fair to point out that Wilson was one of Bournemouth’s worst performers during the final phase of the campaign. Indeed, the 28-year-old failed to score a single goal in his last seven league matches, a run of form that may have cost the Cherries relegation.

That being said, Wilson is undoubtedly a quality forward given his experience, physical prowess and work ethic. Those are ideal characteristics for anyone looking to thrive under Jose Mourinho, and as the Portuguese mastermind looks to add more bite into his attacking unit, Wilson could be a more than capable back-up for Kane, especially for a price that falls below the £20 million mark.
