According to Sky Germany, as cited by Football.London, Tottenham have expressed interest in Robin Quaison. The Premier League giants have contacted 1.FSV Mainz 05 regarding a potential move for their star striker, who is believed to be a part of Jose Mourinho’s plan of signing a back-up for Harry Kane this summer.

Robin Quaison: The lone wolf of Mainz

Quaison has been a part of Mainz side since 2017 when he joined from US Palermo for a fee of €2.5 million. However, it was during the 2019/20 campaign when he really found his feet in the Bundesliga.

In a season where Mainz struggled to keep up with their competitors for the large parts of the campaign, Quaison’s 13 goals in 32 matches proved crucial in their survival. They were, in fact, worth their weight in gold as Mainz’s primary centre-forward, Jean-Philippe Mateta was out injured for the most of the campaign.

As a result, the 05-ers didn’t necessarily find any problems in finding the back of the net and finished ahead of clubs like Koln and FC Augsburg in the relegation scrap.

What can he bring to the table?

Quaison was initially advertised as an attacking midfielder when he first arrived at Mainz. However, the Swede has proven himself to be a lethal goalscoring outlet, of late.

Thanks to his aggression and work-ethic, the 26-year-old has become a vital cog in Mainz’s first line of press. His effectiveness in the press is combined with a pinch of technical quality and pace that makes him a scourge for the defenders on the counter.

Quaison is also pretty sharp in front of goal and only needs half a yard of space to find the back of the net, with the four of the striker’s 13 goals coming from set-pieces this past season.

The ex-Palermo man is a physically astute striker as well. Although he might not be excellent in the air, he certainly isn’t afraid to commit himself to headed duels making him a well-rounded centre-forward.

How does Quaison fit in at Tottenham?

Naturally, Quaison is a perfect striker for Jose Mourinho. His lethal finishing, along with the work ethic and tenacity tune in well with the Portuguese’s counter-attacking philosophy. Also, the Mainz star has the physicality to deal with the fast-paced nature of the Premier League.

This all points towards Quaison being an excellent option for Tottenham Hotspur. The Swede can offer some much-needed depth in the number nine slot, and unlike established superstars, he won’t demand a lot of game-time, which could only bode well for Mourinho.

Although one might argue that the striker does not have the experience of playing in the Premier League, Quaison is, no doubt, capable of doing so if given the opportunity. Not to mention, he is also a financially viable option for the Lilywhites as they cope with the economic crisis inflicted by the Coronavirus.
