Sky Sports has recently stated that Tottenham Hotspur are locked in a three-way battle for Brighton and Hove Albion defender Ben White as they are monitoring his progress at the American Express Community Stadium this season. It is believed that Spurs will face stiff competition from Manchester United and Chelsea in pursuit of the English centre-back (via Sky Sports).

White’s Impressive Form In The Premier League This Season

The 23-year-old has been one of Graham Potter’s top performers in the Premier League this season as he has already put in some dominant displays at the heart of the Brighton backline. White has made 11 appearances for the East Sussex outfit this term, picking up two yellow cards and securing 979 minutes of playing time across various competitions.

The Poole-born defensive ace has done well to average 2.3 tackles, 2.1 interceptions and 1.5 clearances per game in the English top tier this season. He has also distributed the ball relatively well when playing his way out from the back after completing 81.8% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).

However, White’s excellent contributions in defence have not translated to positive results on the field as the Seagulls have only won two of their ten league matches thus far. Therefore, he could be tempted to make a switch to a top club like Spurs in the future if he intends to compete for major trophies at the top level.

What Will The English Defender Add To Jose Mourinho’s Team?

Standing at 1.85m, White can be a towering presence inside his half as he can use his strength to outmuscle the opposition in the air. He has also shown excellent defensive awareness this season by reading the danger quickly and earning possession back for his side. White is also highly versatile as he is primarily a centre-back but can also fill in as a right-back or play as a holding midfielder if required.

The English defender has also proven his worth in high-profile matches this season as evident from his solid performance versus Liverpool last weekend. He is undeniably a player on the rise, so Tottenham will do well to win the race to acquire his services.

White is good enough to fight for a regular starting spot in Jose Mourinho’s first-team as he has matured into a quality defender over the past 18 months. He will add some serious competition for the likes of Davinson Sanchez, Toby Alderweireld, Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga at North London in the coming seasons.

Plus, a manager of Mourinho’s experience could be the ideal man to oversee White’s development in the future. All in all, Spurs should consider bolstering their defensive department by orchestrating a move to bring the Brighton star to the English capital.
