Tottenham Hotspur have joined Manchester United in the race to recruit Norwich City full-back Max Aarons, according to yesterday’s report from 90min.

Antonio Conte’s side are prepared to shake up their right wing-back area once more with the club open to selling either Emerson Royal or Matt Doherty, with the former coming under considerable pressure from his supporters for some underwhelming performances.

Conte also looks likely to loan out Djed Spence, who was recruited in the summer but hasn’t been given a huge amount of game time to make his mark in the English capital yet despite excelling at Nottingham Forest last season.

With this, a right-sided player will be needed, with Aarons believed to be one of their targets along with Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters who broke into England’s national side but hasn’t made the plane for the World Cup despite the absence of Reece James, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker and Kieran Tripper all going instead.

Spurs aren’t the only team in the race for Aarons though, with Manchester United also believed to be considering him as an option to come in and compete with Diogo Dalot for a starting spot at Old Trafford.

Their potential move for the Canaries’ star could potentially be dependent on them offloading Aaron Wan-Bissaka during the winter window though, with his former club Crystal Palace reported to be interested in securing a deal.

The Verdict:

Spence seems perfect for Conte’s system so it’s strange that he hasn’t managed to get more minutes under his belt to shine, though the Italian may feel the former Middlesbrough man isn’t ready to make the step up yet.

Aarons, on the other hand, has the advantage of having top-tier experience under his belt already but you feel they may benefit from taking a chance on Spence considering he’s already at the club and will only improve with more playing time.

If they want to focus on their short-term goals though, which is probably to be in the mix for the top four, then you can understand why Conte wants an upgrade.

However, you have to wonder whether Aarons would be the best possible option for Spurs to pursue considering the fact he would need to make the step back up mid-season and that would be a tough task.

He may be a cheaper option than others to pursue – but they will still be paying a big price considering his contract at Carrow Road doesn’t expire until the summer of 2024.
