In a recent report, Bild has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have identified Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng as a top target for this summer transfer window. It is understood that the German centre-back is on top of Spurs’ wish-list as the North London club look to strengthen their defence in this off-season (via Bild).

Boateng’s Impressive Numbers In European Football This Season

Boateng is having another solid season at the Allianz Arena as he has been responsible for producing a series of commanding performances as one of Hans-Dieter Flick’s primary central defenders. The 32-year-old has made 37 appearances for the Bavarian outfit this term, scoring two goals and securing one assist in all competitions.

The German defensive ace has enjoyed a decent run of form in Europe where he has averaged 2.1 tackles, 2.0 interceptions and 2.3 clearances per 90 minutes in the UEFA Champions League this season. He also took care of the ball well when playing his way out from the back after completing 89.3% of his attempted passes in European football (stats via whoscored).

Boateng’s current contract at Bayern Munich is set to run out at the end of this campaign, so Spurs could land him on a free transfer if they are willing to offer him an attractive package to convince the player to seal a move to the English capital this summer.

Is The German Centre-Back The Right Choice For Tottenham?

Boateng excels at sensing the danger quickly and can make some crucial interceptions at the back by timing his tackles well. He is an excellent passer of the ball and is usually a composed presence on the ball. The Bundesliga star has got a wealth of experience and a proven record for winning trophies at the highest level.

Standing at 1.90m, Boateng can use his towering presence to win some important aerial duels at both ends of the field. Plus, he can be a threat from indirect set-pieces in the opposition half. The 76-time German international will be an excellent choice for Spurs in the short term as he will bolster the quality of their first-team considerably in the coming seasons.

A defender of Boateng’s quality could help the North London outfit end their long wait for a major trophy and might even aid them in their quest to keep Harry Kane at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium beyond this summer.

At 32, Boateng still has plenty of football left in his locker and would be a clever signing for Daniel Levy as he will be available as a free agent in a few months’ time. However, without Champions League football, Spurs could find it difficult to lure the player to the Premier League during the summer transfer window.
