In a recent report from Football.London, it was mentioned that Tottenham Hotspur have been offered the chance to sign Edouard Mendy in the January transfer window. It is understood that Spurs are looking for a long-term replacement for 35-year-old Hugo Lloris and Mendy could be a decent option.

Mendy’s Campaign With Chelsea So Far

Mendy had a decent start at Stamford Bridge this season with a few influential displays at the back. Still, after suffering an injury in the past few weeks the Senegal international fell down the pecking order. He has made ten appearances so far keeping 1 clean sheet and conceding 10 goals for the Blues across all fronts.

The 30-year-old has earned 31 clean sheets over 74 appearances for Chelsea in the Premier League since joining them in September 2020. However, he was not given the nod even after recovering from his injury earlier than expected which saw Kepa Arrizabalaga re-emerge for the London club (stats via Premier League).

Is Mendy The Right Fit For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Antonio Conte?

Mendy has definitely earned his place as one of the best shot-stoppers in Europe. He fared well under Frank Lampard in his debut season and had a brilliant run under Thomas Tuchel which saw the club lift the UEFA Champions League trophy after nine years. His impressive run of form in 2021 earned him the Best FIFA Men’s Goal Keeper Award.

The Senegalese shot-stopper remains comfortable in distributing the ball from the back and remains calm when the opposition are on the front foot. At 1.94 meters tall, he is more of an aerially assertive keeper as he often comes out on crosses to secure the ball and remove the threat. Furthermore, he does well parrying the ball heading into the odd areas of the goal and is strong enough to secure his net from long shots.

Mendy playing second fiddle to Hugo Lloris would not be a viable option for him, but with the French shot-stopper nearing 35 years of age, it is more and more difficult for him to perform consistently at this point. Mendy fits the bill of a modern goalkeeper and could very well feature as a regular in the next term. At 30, he could undoubtedly play in between the sticks for the Lilywhites over the coming years, so Antonio Conte should do well to make a decent offer to the Blues and secure his services in the next transfer window.
