Tottenham Hotspur eyeing move for former Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to succeed Hugo Lloris

Tottenham Hotspur are among teams that are keeping an eye on Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez as a potential replacement for Hugo Lloris, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes (h/t BirminghamLive).

Lloris is already 35 years old and in the final years of his playing days at the top level. He has been an elite goalkeeper for France and Spurs for more than a decade.

But his mistakes seem to be increasing and his body isn’t immune from the natural process of ageing. A replacement is needed sooner rather than later.

Lloris is on a contract that expires only in the summer of 2024 but some would feel Spurs took the short way out of finding a new, world-class goalkeeper by sticking him for two more seasons. But we can’t postpone it any more.

This is why links to Martinez, among other potential names, ahead of the January transfer window have come at the right time. The Argentine left Arsenal in the summer of 2020.

Now, the Villans have two European Cups to their name but it’s safe to say they aren’t a ‘bigger club’ than the Gunners in the 21st Century. He arguably took a step down to get more playing time and that has worked in his favour.

He is a fan favourite at Villa Park and a regular for two-time World Cup winners Argentina, where he has been their No. 1 goalkeeper at the 2022 edition in Qatar. He is also 30 years old and given the long shelf life of goalkeepers, he can give us a good four-five years of service if he does come here.

A few hurdles, however, are bound to arise. It remains to be seen how much his loyalty still lies with the Gunners and if his valuation skyrockets after a good campaign in the Middle East with La Albiceleste.
