In a recent report, Mirror stated that Tottenham Hotspur could trigger the £40m release clause in an attempt to sign Cristian Romero permanently after seeing a successful debut season in the Spurs outfit.
It has also been mentioned that Daniel Levy has injected a sum of £150m which could be used in the transfer window stating that Antonio Conte will be backed financially into improving the squad ahead of the next season.
Cristian Romero was brought on loan from Atlanta in an attempt to revamp the backline. The Argentine international has bagged a goal for Spurs this season.
Despite falling victim to injury, the 24-year-old managed to average 2.8 tackles, 1.6 interceptions, and 3.3 clearances per game over 28 appearances. He even went on to impress with his passing ability maintaining a pass success rate of 86.6% completing 60.3 average passes per 90 mins. (stats via whoscored)
It is highly likely for Antonio Conte to trigger the obligatory clause in Cristian Romero’s contract as he believes that the centre-back is perfect for the Premier League as evident from the gaffer’s praises for him during the critical matches.
The right-sided defender can time his tackles well and is unafraid of putting his foot into hardbound tackles. Romero has no significant weaknesses. A 1.85m tall frame provides him with the ability to win a few aerial duels as well. On top of this, he can even distribute the ball accurately from the backline.
At 24, he still has his best days ahead of him and plenty of room for improvement. Conte would be wise to permanently sign him ahead of the next season. Tottenham Hotspur are heading in for a title run and securing a Champions League place this season opens up a possibility to end their 14-year long wait for silverware, and Cristian Romero would absolutely help them reach their targets for the next season.
