Tottenham duo Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn doubtful for next two games

According to injury news from The Athletic (subscription required), Tottenham Hotspur duo Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn are doubtful for the next two games. Both the forwards were absent on the weekend and they will miss the Carabao Cup game against Wolves but there is a slight chance they can feature in the derby against Arsenal.

Spurs have lost a number of key players in the last few weeks to injuries. Lucas and Bergwijn were the last two additions to the list last week when Spurs faced Rennes in the Conference League. While Bergwijn was down with a foot injury, it was unclear what sort of issue had kept Lucas out.

Bergwijn is injured

Tottenham had to push Son Heung-Min back into action against Chelsea on Sunday as they were low on options. Lucas and Bergwijn played no part in the game as Giovani Lo Celso had to slot in on the right side of the attack. It would seem both players are still expected to be out for a few more days.

Nuno Espirito Santo provided an update on their fitness ahead of Tottenham’s clash against Wolves, with the manager elaborating on Bergwijn’s situation in particular.

“He [Bergwijn] has an injury on his foot, a sprain, he twisted his ankle. It’s very, very painful and the decision was to protect his foot and at the same time keep doing upper body workouts and try to maintain as fit as possible. But the injury needs to settle down and prevent him from feeling pain. It’s very painful now.”

Tottenham star Lucas Moura in training.

He ruled them out for the Wolves fixture but was hopeful of having them back for the derby against Arsenal.

“I cannot answer that (whether the pair will be back). All the injuries have a process. We hope the players improve. We don’t enjoy it. It is painful to see them out. But at the same time we’re hopeful they recover sooner or later and can rejoin the group.”

It will surely be difficult to get results with key players out. These are two big games in the span of a few days and could decide how the season goes from here. Spurs can hardly afford any more losses and will need players back sooner rather than later.
