Tottenham Hotspur would have a ‘good chance’ of rivalling Manchester City for Alessandro Bastoni’s signature, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Spurs were heavily linked with a move for the 23-year-old over the summer before he ended up staying put with Inter Milan, yet speculation over his long-term future has arisen once again.

Back in June, the Daily Mail reported that Tottenham and Manchester United were eager to prise Bastoni away from San Siro following a couple of outstanding campaigns.

The Italy international has previously worked under the north London outfit’s manager Antonio Conte during his time at Inter, but he ended up staying put with his agent declaring he is happy in his current surroundings.

“Bastoni will stay at Inter for sure. He has a contract and he’s happy with Inter – there’s no problem,” he said via transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

However, Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport have now claimed that United and their local rivals City are set to test the centre-back’s desire to remain in his homeland once more.

It’s stated that Inter will demand £50 million for Bastoni, who has just over 18 months left to run on his £122,000-per-week contract.

What has Jones said about Bastoni?

When asked if Tottenham will be concerned by City’s interest in Bastoni, Jones informed GiveMeSport that he believes the capital club will fancy their chances of competing for his services.

He said: “In the past, I think they’d have probably feared the worst. But right now, I think that they would have reason to still be willing to go head-to-head for something like this.

“Conte’s got a good record so far with players brought in from Italy; that’s a good selling point.

“As long as the player himself would be assured that Conte is hanging around, then I think that Tottenham would have a good a chance of anyone of competing with Man City if they do go for Bastoni.”

How good is Bastoni?

Bastoni has racked up 12 goal contributions in 126 appearances for Inter, playing a key role in the Nerazzurri claiming the Serie A title and the Italian Cup in the last two seasons.

Do you know this obscure player Tottenham signed in the January transfer window?

Mounir El Hamdaoui Hélder Postiga Stéphane Dalmat Noé Pamarot

As per FBref, the 6 foot 3 ace has also ranked in the 99th percentile for shot-creating actions and progressive passes received, 97th for expected assists, 90th for progressive carries and progressive passes, and the 85th for pressures and completed dribbles amongst his positional peers over the last year.

It’s easy to understand, therefore, why Bastoni is a player in such high demand, and Tottenham supporters will surely be hoping Conte and co. can fend off the competition for him.
