Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur suffer a set-back in their pursuit of Juventus ace Weston McKennie

According to transfer news on Caught Offside, Juventus are hopeful of retaining the services of Weston McKennie amidst transfer interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

The slick midfielder joined the Old Lady last summer from FC Schalke. The American was one of the first signings of the Andrea Pirlo era and formed an important part of the Italian’s set-up last season.

Juventus failed to retain their league title but managed to sneak into the Top 4 on the final day of the 2020/21 Serie A season. McKennie played a huge role in this, contributing to seven goals in 34 league appearances.

While his debut season in Turin wasn’t sensational by any means, there was enough to suggest that McKennie could become a star in the years to come. Things looked to have taken a turn for the worse when Massimiliano Allegri replaced Andrea Pirlo. The American midfielder’s future at the club looked far from secure.

However, Juventus now appear hopeful of retaining his services. This will be a big blow for Tottenham as they have been heavily linked with the player.

Forced to look elsewhere?

Fabio Paratici signed McKennie for Juventus last summer and appears keen to repeat the trick in North London. Good on the ball and not afraid to put in the hard work, McKennie could have been a real asset for Antonio Conte.

However, the 23-year-old is not the only midfielder on Spurs’ transfer list. Franck Kessie is in the final year of his contract and could leave as a free agent next summer. Tottenham have been linked with him recently, and the AC Milan star could continue his development under Conte.

Alternatively, the Italian boss could bring his former disciple, Marcelo Brozovic, from Inter Milan to England. The Croatian also has a little over six months on his current deal, and Tottenham have been linked with him

It would appear that the midfield remains an area that Conte and Paratici are attempting to improve upon. Given what we have seen in recent months, it is difficult to argue with that assessment.
