Tottenham handed boost in race to sign Nicolas Gonzalez from VfB Stuttgart

According to Fiorentina.it (h/t Football.london), Serie A side Fiorentina have decided to withdraw their interest in VfB Stuttgart winger Nicolas Gonzalez handing Tottenham a boost in pursuit of the Argentine.

Gonzalez joined Stuttgart in 2018 but endured a difficult debut season in Germany as they were relegated from the Bundesliga. However, the winger found his footing in the second division, helping them back to the top-flight. The 22-year-old was particularly impressive in the post-lockdown period, helping the club earn back promotion to the German top-flight.

Upon returning to the Bundesliga, Gonzalez carried on in the same vein of form. He bagged six goals and two assists in 15 league matches before an injury cut short his season. The 23-year-old has made five appearances for the Argentine national team and has scored two goals.

The ever-reliable Fabrizio Romano reported that Tottenham were among the clubs interested in signing Gonzalez this summer, along with fellow Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion and Serie A side Fiorentina. In fact, he had even claimed that the Viola had offered €25m with add-ons for the Argentine.

However, as per the aforementioned report, Fiorentina have now decided to end their pursuit of Gonzalez after failing to reach an agreement with his employers. Instead, they have now switched their attention towards Valencia’s Goncalo Guedes, handing Tottenham a boost in the race to sign the winger.

A versatile operator, Gonzalez is a left-winger but can play as a centre-forward as well. Such flexibility and adaptability would make him a handy signing for Tottenham heading into next season. With Fiorentina dropping out of the race, the path has become a bit clearer for Spurs to move for teh Argentine.
