Tottenham handed a financial sanction for Super League involvement

Tottenham Hotspur told European Super League fine as big 6 come to an agreement with the Premier League

According to a report by The Athletic (Subscription Required), Tottenham Hotspur, along with 6 English clubs, have come to an agreement with the Premier League to decide the fine for taking part in the European Super League.

12 clubs came together in April to announce their plans of launching a breakaway ‘Super League’. This would see the founding members of the league get a guaranteed spot in the competition every year. However, the English clubs backed out within 48 hours of the announcement.

There were always going to be repercussions for this and it has now been revealed that the six clubs will have to pay a combined £22million fine for their involvement. This money would be invested in grassroots football.

Tottenham slapped with heavy fine

The big 6, which includes Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea alongside Spurs, are also told that a £25million fine for each of them and a 30-point deduction would follow if a repeat incident takes place.

This would certainly deter these clubs from trying such a venture again in the future. Although it is never good news seeing your club fined and lose money like this, a case against any fine can hardly be made here.

Such a league would have severely damaged the principles and morality that form the basis of the beautiful game. Fans protesting after the ESL announcement was proof that the footballing world did not want it.
