Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario remembered his former club’s role in helping him leap into Premier League football.
Vicario has made an immense amount of impact at Spurs, having joined from Empoli in the summer. He was also linked with moves to Inter and Bayern Munich but Spurs, who were prepared to lose Hugo Lloris, made the move for the Italian and signed him. And Vicario has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League this season.
Speaking to Sky Italia, Guglielmo Vicario was quick to express gratitude towards his former club Empoli and Italian football legend Paolo Di Canio for motivating him to leap into the Premier League.
He said: “I thank Paolo Di Canio for the kind words regarding the leap from Castellani to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. I can’t forget my roots and I will always be grateful to the impact that Empoli and the Castellani stadium have left me in these two years, have allowed me to live my English dream. In the transposition to two completely different contexts, and to two completely different clubs.
The 27-year-old found similarities in the passion between the Empoli and Spurs fans. He said: “The positive shock I had on the first day I joined entered New White Hart Lane, it was incredible. Every time we are lucky enough to play at home the emotions are never the same, there is always something to go and get and something to take away. And I have it in my heart, but also at Castellani I have many memories with the people of Empoli”.
Spurs had started off the season excellently and were at the top of the table. Injury issues meant that they have faced three defeats on the trot but Vicario has no reason to be disappointed with his form at the club so far.
