According to Daily Mail, Tottenham are eyeing a move for Tariq Lamptey. The Brighton & Hove Albion defender has been identified as an ideal replacement for Serge Aurier as the club look to reshape their defensive unit. Lamptey’s exorbitant £50 million price tag, though, could be a potential cause for concern for the Lilywhites.

What Can Tariq Lamptey Offer On The Table?

Tariq Lamptey has enjoyed a lot of success since his £3 million move to Brighton & Hove Albion at the start of last year. He made a solid impression during the backend of last season, becoming the club’s first-choice right-back this term, before suffering an injury that kept him out for the second half of the 2020/21 campaign.

Lamptey, nevertheless, is regarded as a top talent due to his attacking qualities. Standing at just 1.64m, the youngster’s low centre of gravity makes him an ideal ball-carrier in the final third, with the player himself boasting the pace and skill to cause problems for the opposition defences.

A former member of the Chelsea youth academy, Lamptey is a right midfielder by trade. However, the Englishman can play as a right-back if required, though he typically favours the right wing-back position that allows him to attack quite often.

The 20-year-old is gifted with technical qualities as well, especially when it comes to rotating possession quickly in the final third. Not to mention, his pace makes him a scourge for defenders on the counter, making the youngster quite similar to Barcelona’s Sergino Dest.

How Does Lamptey Fit In At Tottenham?

Tariq Lamptey is undoubtedly a gifted youngster, who does have the potential to become one of the Premier League’s best wingbacks. His addition to the Tottenham team, therefore, could make sense from a sporting perspective.

At Spurs, the youngster will be a direct replacement for Aurier. Fortunately for him, Jose Mourinho has left the club and that could be a boon in disguise for the player.

However, Tottenham must negotiate with Brighton over the transfer fee of Lamptey. A price tag of £50 million is far too much for a player who is yet to experience one full season in the Premier League. In fact, anything more than the £20 million mark will be a risk, as far as Spurs are concerned.

Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that the Seagulls would want to lower their demands, having only signed Lamptey at the start of last year. Tottenham, as a result, may have to look elsewhere.
