Tottenham have offered £50m for James Maddison and Harvey Barnes after Leicester City were relegated from the Premier League, according to reports.
The Foxes couldn’t survive on the final day of the Premier League season despite beating West Ham 2-1, with Everton’s win at home to Bournemouth enough to keep them up.
Maddison and Barnes were two of Leicester’s brightest sparks in a miserable season for the club with the former contributing ten goals and nine assists in the league, while the latter bagged 13 goals and provided one assist for his team-mates.
And now the Daily Mail claim that Tottenham ‘have launched a joint bid’ for the Leicester pair with Newcastle also interested in a double deal, while Aston Villa and West Ham want Barnes.
But ‘Spurs have made the first move, with the combined offer – believed to be in excess of £50million – set to be rejected by Leicester’ as the newly-relegated Championship side think they can get more for the duo.
It would’ve represented as much as a £70m discount from a year ago with Leicester wanting around £60m for each of the players at the time.
Tottenham have made Maddison a ‘priority’ this summer and Leicester will have to sell this summer if they want to avoid losing the playmaker for free next summer.
CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs says that Leicester’s stance on Barnes is different with the former Premier League champions hoping to keep him around.
Jacobs told GiveMeSport: “With Barnes it’s less clear because Leicester really don’t want to sell, but they’re in the Championship and he had such a phenomenal season for them, there’s a very realistic chance he goes, especially with several Premier League clubs looking at him as well.”
Barnes has shown previously, with West Brom and Barnsley, how good he can be in the Championship and he would surely be one of the best players in that division next season.
But Jacobs is tipping Barnes to Tottenham to “grow legs over the coming weeks” with a chance of a “double raid” for him and Maddison.
Last Word On Spurs: “The other dark horse, I would say, in the conversation for Spurs is Harvey Barnes too. So, there may be an opportunity for a double raid.”
He added: “I think Harvey Barnes to Spurs is going to grow legs over the coming weeks.”
