Tottenham Hotspur are mulling over whether to make a big-money summer move for Villarreal central defender Pau Torres, according to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.

Spurs have played themselves back into contention for a place in the Champions League next season, with a top four spot still within reach, but it seems head coach Antonio Conte is already making plans ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

What’s the latest news involving Torres?

It was revealed in March that Tottenham are keeping tabs on Torres, with Conte being a huge admirer and Villarreal rating the centre-half at upwards of £50million.

But it appears Spurs have upped the ante in their pursuit of the 17-cap Spain international as the opening of the transfer window draws closer.

That is because Tottenham officials were in the stands running the rule over Torres and Villarreal team-mate Arnaut Danjuma during both legs of their current employers’ Champions League semi-final against Liverpool.

However, the north Londoners are not the only Premier League club looking to strike a deal as Torres has worked his way back onto Manchester United’s radar.

The 25-year-old will enter the final two years of his Villarreal contract, which is worth £63,000-per-week, in the summer.

What has Michael Bridge said about Torres?

Bridge understands that Conte, who was appointed as Tottenham’s boss last November, is keen to welcome Torres to Hotspur Way.

However, the Sky Sports reporter warns Torres will not come cheap and sealing his arrival would result in Spurs having to fork out far more cash than if they went for alternative options.

Bridge told GIVEMESPORT: “He is definitely on their radar – there’s no doubt about that.

“But he would probably be one of the more expensive options in a long list of defenders they’re looking at.”

Why is Torres of interest to Spurs?

Torres clinched his first piece of silverware when he helped Villarreal to Europa League glory last season and he has followed up a successful campaign with more impressive performances.

He failed to miss a single minute as the Spanish side reached the final four of the Champions League and he also showed that he can be a threat in the opposition’s penalty area by finding the back of the net in the last 16 victory over Juventus.

Torres has been described as ‘extraordinary’ and has already made more than 170 senior club appearances, underlining how he has quickly established himself as a trusted central defender.
