According to Foot Mercato, Real Madrid have registered their interest in Serge Aurier. It appears the Spanish giants are keen on securing an alternative for Dani Carvajal, which has led them towards the Tottenham right-back. Although Real Madrid’s interest in Aurier isn’t concrete, they are indeed exploring the possibility of a deal, especially thanks to the defender’s relationship with Raphael Varane.

Serge Aurier’s Spell At Tottenham

Serge Aurier has had a mixed time at Tottenham since his €25 million move from PSG in the summer of 2017. He has made 110 competitive appearances for the club, scoring eight goals while registering 17 assists.

The Ivorian has largely been Spurs’ first-choice right-back, following the departure of Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid. However, he has often been a subject of criticism due to his lack of consistency and a particularly questionable temper.

Yet, Aurier has continued to become a first-team regular at Tottenham, even under interim manager Ryan Mason. For all his defensive frailties and inconsistency, the former Toulouse starlet does offer a strong presence going forward while his athletic nature is well suited to Premier League’s style of play.

Aurier is quite experienced as well, with 160 Ligue 1 games under his belt as well as 66 caps for the Ivorian national team.

Should Tottenham Cash In On Aurier?

Serge Aurier’s fate at Tottenham largely depends on the club’s next manager. From a sporting perspective, though, the Ivorian is certainly not quality enough to help the Lilywhites become a top-four Premier League side, especially if they end up hiring someone who prefers a possession-based system.

Yet, Tottenham may still have to keep hold of Aurier, especially given how new signing Matt Doherty has struggled since joining from Wolves last summer. If Spurs are to offload a right-back, it should be the Irishman.

However, it is fair to point out that Aurier’s current contract in north London expires at the end of next season. While it remains to be seen whether the Ivorian is open to extending his contract, failing to do so could see him leave the club for free next summer.

As such, it might be a good idea for Tottenham to offload the former PSG star. A reported price tag of €12 million should serve as a decent financial boost for the Premier League giants as they look to reshape their defensive unit this summer.
