Tottenham Hotspur could find the ‘perfect partner’ for Cristian Romero in Villarreal defender Pau Torres, according to journalist Dean Jones.
The 25-year-old has been linked with a move away from his boyhood club since last summer and now finally appears set to seek a new challenge ahead of next season.
According to 90min, Tottenham’s interest in Torres began almost 12 months ago, but he decided to remain with his boyhood club and compete in the Champions League.
That decision was vindicated after the Yellow Submarine reached the semi-finals of Europe’s elite cup competition, and the Spain international could have his pick of potential suitors.
A recent report in the Daily Mail revealed that Spurs’ recruitment team scouted Torres, who has previously been described as “extraordinary”, as his side fell to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Liverpool.
And Football Insider claim that the north London outfit are growing in confidence that the 6 foot 3 ace can be signed for £10 million below his £55m release clause.
Tottenham could face competition from Manchester United for Torres’ signature, though, but securing a top-four finish would surely put them in pole position.
Jones believes that Torres could be ‘good value’ for Antonio Conte’s charges and that his exit from Villarreal ‘seems imminent’ after much speculation.

He told GiveMeSport: “Pau Torres is good value at £45 million, to be honest. It’s really hard to find centre-backs that have been tested at European level and are available.
“I believe that Torres will now become available, he’s been mooted for a transfer for so long that it seems imminent. So, I think Tottenham should push for him and look to get that perfect partner for Romero.”
According to The Athletic, the main focus for Tottenham when the market reopens will be to sign a left-sided centre-back, allowing Conte to continue with his favoured 3-4-3 formation.
None of Spurs’ current options in the heart of defence, Eric Dier, Romero, Joe Rodon, Japhet Tanganga or Davinson Sanchez are left-footed.

That has meant full-back Ben Davies has been filling in centrally since the Italian tactician’s arrival, but a more natural option is desired going forwards.
As a result, Torres could be an ideal candidate to provide some balance to Tottenham’s backline and has the potential to form a formidable partnership with Romero and Dier in the heart of defence.
