Spurs went ahead by two gaols in the game, but Wolves showed a terrific attitude to force penalties.

The visitors first took the lead through Tanguy Ndombele, who broke into the box and turned defender Wily Boly before finishing past Jose Sa.

Harry Kane doubled Tottenham's advantage shortly after, but Wolves would not lie down.

Leander Dendoncker got one back for the hosts before Daniel Podence tied things up with 58 minutes on the clock.

However, Bruno Lage's team delivered a shocking effort in the penalty shootout as Ruben Neves, Dendoncker and Conor Coady all missed their spot-kicks.

Tottenham will play Burnley at Turf Moor in the next round.

But first Nuno's men will have to turn their attention towards Sunday's crunch north London derby against Arsenal.
