Tottenham technical director Johan Lange has praised the impact of January signing Timo Werner since joining the club on loan.

The former Chelsea forward shocked many when he joined Spurs from RB Leipzig over the winter, with a view to help the club reach the top four this season. With Heung-Min Son away on international duty, Ivan Perisic joining Hadjuk Split on loan and Manor Solomon injured, the forward ranks were in need of a boost.

Werner has provided that on the left, moving Richarlison to centre-forward since his arrival. The German international has made three Premier League starts since making his return to the division, grabbing two assists.

It remains to be seen whether the 27-year-old will continue that output, but it has certainly helped the team push for Champions League qualification.

Timo Werner praise

Johan Lange overlooked his first transfer window at Tottenham as technical director in January, having made the transition from Aston Villa in October 2023. The 44-year-old saw the additions of Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner bolster the options available to Ange Postecoglou for the second half of the season.

Werner came in for plenty of praise from Lange as he said on Tottenham’s official social media: “I think Timo [Werner] is an offensive player who has a massive experience from top level football. The Bundesliga, the Premier League, the Champions League and of course with the German national team.

“He’s also a player who, for most of his career, has played in a style not too dissimilar to ours which means his level of adaptation period could be relatively short and it has been good to see him already effecting games quite early on.”

Timo Werner transfer

The future of Timo Werner beyond this season is currently uncertain, but that could change in the months ahead. The forward has an option in his loan that could make his move permanent, should Tottenham wish to trigger it.

According to a report from Sky Sports, the transfer clause is worth £15million, which could see him stay beyond his loan period. Postecoglou has also outlined just how important the move could be for Werner’s career.

Introducing the ex-Chelsea striker last month, the manager was caught saying on a video from Tottenham’s official social media: “Morning lads, just before we get into training, I just want to welcome Timo to the group and again, welcome mate.

“We wish you all the best from everyone here. From my perspective, we talk about family a lot. Part of our process is that people can come in, I think we’ve made them feel comfortable on and off the field, and I think that he can help us because he’s here for his career, but he’s here to help us as well.

“So it’s important we try and make him feel comfortable – so welcome mate.”

It remains to be seen if the option to sign permanently will be taken up, but so far it seems as though there’s plenty of good signs.
