Tottenham Hotspur have announced that manager Antonio Conte will be out of action for a while after undergoing surgery on his gallbladder.

The Italian had been suffering abdominal pain and he was diagnosed with cholecystitis.

Tottenham will now be without the 53-year-old for an unspecified amount of time following the procedure.

“Antonio Conte recently became unwell with severe abdominal pain,” read a club statement.

“Following a diagnosis of cholecystitis, he will be undergoing surgery to remove his gallbladder today and will return following a period of recuperation.

“Everyone at the club wishes him well.”

Tottenham will not have Conte for this Sunday’s clash with reigning Premier League champions Manchester City and the next game against Leicester City.

The former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss will likely miss his side’s Champions League tie against AC Milan. There are also London derbies at the end of this month against Chelsea and West Ham United.

Conte’s assistant Cristian Stellini will take charge in Conte’s absence. Stellini joined Conte during his title-winning season with Inter Milan and followed him to London in 2021.

Stellini has experience as the primary figure on the sidelines, managing games during Conte’s suspensions in Serie A.

He has also handled press conference duty for the club’s domestic matches this season.

This surgery procedure is usually safe but can keep patients recovering for two to eight weeks.

Tottenham are fifth in the Premier League after 21 games, and they will be hoping to push back into the top four.

They started their season well and established themselves in one of the Champions League spots, but their form has dropped recently.

They have only two wins in their last six league games, while Nottingham Forest knocked them out of the Carabao Cup.

However, they remain in the Champions League, where they should have a solid chance against struggling Serie A champions AC Milan.

The Rossoneri have lost their last three games and have one win in their past six matches.
