Tottenham have confirmed the departure of Ryan Sessegnon after releasing their list of retained players ahead of next season.

The left-back, who joined Spurs from rivals Fulham in 2019, made only one appearance lasting just seven minutes under Ange Postecoglou during another injury-hit campaign in north London.

Sessegnon required surgery on a hamstring injury sustained in the first week of pre-season training last summer and briefly made his comeback in the FA Cup win over Burnley back in January before hitting another major obstacle.

The 23-year-old suffered another hamstring problem during a 1-1 draw against West Ham in a Premier League 2 fixture in February and subsequently went under the knife again.

After the second bitter blow, the former England Under-21 international wrote on social media: ”I’ve been down this road before. I'll pick myself up, stay head strong and begin my recovery in the best way possible.

"Having been through an operation and the recovery on my other hamstring last year, and knowing how strong that hamstring is now, I know this is the best solution to put an end to the reoccurring issues.

"Speaking on behalf of anyone who's been in this situation, please be careful what you say online. Words hurt and no-one chooses to be in this position."

Leaving Spurs along with Sessegnon are Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic and Japhet Tanganga.

Dier and Perisic will now complete permanent moves to Bayern Munich and Hajduk Split respectively, having been on loan with those clubs since January.

Tanganga, meanwhile, spent the second half of last season on loan at Millwall, who have been pushing hard to seal his return on a full-time basis.

Spurs did have the option to extend the versatile defender’s deal by another 12 months, but decided against it.

“We thank Eric, Ivan, Ryan and Japhet for their service to the club and wish them all the very best for the future,” Tottenham said.

Also departing Tottenham this summer are Development Squad players Billy Heaps and Charlie Sayers, plus Under-18s duo Kieran Morgan and Han Willhoft-King.

Spurs said: “We thank Charlie, Billy, Kieran, Han and their families for their hard work and dedication to our Academy and wish them well for the future.”
