Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with Empoli for the transfer of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
According to Sky Sports, they will pay an initial £17.2 million for the Italian shot-stopper who helped the Serie A side to a mid-table finish with seven clean sheets in 31 league games.
Vicario caught the eye last season with several impressive performances, which drew the attention of Juventus, AS Roma and Inter Milan.
Inter had earmarked Vicario as a possible replacement for Andre Onana, who is attracting interest from Manchester United and Chelsea.
The Cameroonian goalkeeper reportedly favours a move to Old Trafford, but Inter have refused to budge on their asking price, with the Nerazurri holding out for a fee of around £50m.
Inter have already rejected an offer from Chelsea, but they will return with an improved proposal to lure the impressive goalie to Stamford Bridge.
Man United were also keeping tabs on Vicario with Inter playing hardball for Onana, but Tottenham have stolen a march on other interested suitors.
It is unclear whether Vicario’s impending transfer will see Tottenham end their interest in Brentford goalkeeper David Raya.
The Spanish shot-stopper has been agitating for a move away from the Gtech Community Stadium this summer amid interest from Spurs and Man United.
However, interested parties have been reluctant to match Brentford’s £40m valuation for the 27-year-old who is entering the final 12 months of his contract with the Bees.
Vicario only joined Empoli on a permanent deal last summer after an initial loan stint where he impressed after keeping seven clean sheets in 38 league appearances.
The 26-year-old has racked up substantial top-flight experience after making 73 Serie A appearances and keeping 15 clean sheets.
He will replace long-term Spurs goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris who is expected to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.
