This was supposed to be the season that Tottenham took the next step. It’s safe to say things haven’t exactly worked out like that. The José Mourinho Project failed miserably and a season that started with huge potential has been wasted.

Europa League – Round of 16

This really should have been Tottenham’s big chance at a title this season but reserved their most embarrassing defeat of the entire campaign to the 3-0 drubbing they suffered at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb.

FA Cup – Fifth round

Spurs were part of some FA Cup history as they beat ninth-tier Marine in the third round but José Mourinho’s side went back to Merseyside in the fifth round and were beaten by Everton.

EFL Cup – Finalists

Chelsea, Stoke and Brentford were beaten on their way to the final, but in Ryan Mason’s first game the north London side never turned up as they were beaten by Manchester City.

Player of the season: Harry Kane

Heung-min Son, Gareth Bale and Hugo Lloris played their part throughout the campaign but none of them could touch the level of Harry Kane.

The England international was on superfluous form all season long, claiming the Golden Boot and topping the assist table too. Remarkable.

Game of the season: Tottenham 2-0 Manchester City

Tottenham’s ninth game of the season came against eventual champions Manchester City but it was the home side who looked destined for silverware on this cold November evening.

Spurs would win 2-0 and go top of the Premier League – it was all downhill from there.

Top goalscorer: Harry Kane

Only Robert Lewandowski can match Harry Kane for goalscoring prowess in Europe this season as the 27-year-old netted 33 in all competitions.

That he did it with this Spurs side is all the more remarkable.

Rising star: Dane Scarlett

It wasn’t exactly a golden period for Tottenham’s youngsters under José Mourinho but one player the club are excited about is Dane Scarlett.

The 17-year-old may have only made fleeting appearances for the first team this season, but 2021/22 looks like it could be a breakout year.

What comes next?

It’s going to be a huge summer for Daniel Levy and the big-wigs at the Tottenham stadium.

The search for a new manager has thrown up a host of interesting names but the one question any prospective boss will want answered is that of Harry Kane’s future.

Will he be staying next season? Or has his time at Spurs come to end? Right now, nobody knows.
