The giant keeper was once again in world class form for Liverpool and after some reliable use of the ball at feet in the opening exchanges, it was soon his keeping skills which showed the watching world his unbelievable level of play. As the initial stages went end to end, the intriguing battle was marred by the red card of Curtis Jones. After the sending off and an expected change in momentum, Spurs took control of the game in the second half, which meant Ali became one of the busier players on the pitch. A couple of brilliant stops denied the White Hart Lane club from taking an early second half lead, as Jürgen Klopp’s team battled to stay in the match. The slight glimmer of an unlikely win soon drifted away.
Once Diogo Jota was stupidly sent off for two avoidable yellow cards, the game plan became about purely holding onto the point that was on offer, as a low block was a necessity against an exciting adversary. Virgil van Dijk and Joël Matip were superb in their backs to the wall displays, however, it was the impeccable performance of their Brazilian number one which allowed the impossible to stay just about achievable.
Unfortunately, the final moments created a situation that saw Matip put the ball past his own keeper, which was a devastating moment to view. The defensive group was unbelievable today and despite the two goals conceded, Alisson Becker was a supreme entity within a backline that nearly achieved the absolute impossible.
Today was a loss, yet the character shown by the entire team was so much improved to what we consistently saw last year. This game was ruined by VAR with a harsh red card and a goal that was wrongly chalked off for offside.
