Villarreal star Pau Torres opens up on Manchester United interest

Speaking to Goal (h/t The Metro), Villarreal star Pau Torres has opened up on the interest shown in him by Manchester United this summer.

The Spanish international has established himself as one of the finest defenders in La Liga. He enjoyed an excellent 2020/21 campaign that saw the Yellow Submarines win their first major honour- the Europa League.

The 24-year-old has a release clause worth £51million. United for their part are looking to lower that through negotiations. Whether they succeed or not remains to be seen.

The player for his part remains non-plussed and is not worried about his future. He is currently with the Spain squad at the Euros and has given the competition his undivided attention.

“Now I’m focused on the Euros. Then the Super Cup and nice things will come, so I’m totally calm.”

Torres has started both of Spain’s Euro 2020 clashes so far. He is slowly yet surely establishing himself as a mainstay for La Roja. He is on a high after having won the Europa League and is now looking forward to playing in the Champions League next season.

“I have a contract at Villarreal, I just won the first title for the club, we have qualified for the Champions League and it is something that excites me a lot.”

The next stage in his development

While the player has not dismissed the chances of a move away, he appears content with playing for his hometown club. Having come through the ranks in the organization, his affinity for the institution appears to be unquestionable.

Despite his success at Villarreal, there’s only so much that the Spanish side can offer Torres. A move to Old Trafford will be a step up and can open up a door of wider possibilities for him.

Spanish giants Real Madrid are also in the fray for Torres and could compete with United for his signature.

United viewed the Europa League final last month as Torres’ last ‘audition’. It is fair to say that he passed it with flying colours. He is now one of the five players on the club’s shortlist. (h/t MEN)

There appears to be increasing confidence in the club hierarchy that a deal can be struck for him this summer. It will, however, have to wait until after the Euros.
