Arsenal on nearing a ‘total agreement’ with Sporting Lisbon over the transfer of Viktor Gyokeres.
Mikel Arteta’s side have been locked in negotiations with Sporting over a deal to sign the striker.
The Gunners had agreed an initial fixed fee of £55m for the Sweden international, but differences remained over the add-ons involved.
Intermediaries close to Sporting had encouraged rival interest from Saudi Pro League sides and Manchester United, but Arsenal are now closing in on the deal. Gyokeres had insisted he only wants Arsenal this summer.
The Athletic are reporting that a ‘total agreement’ is now imminent with a breakthrough found in talks. A final fee of around £63.4m including add-ons is set to be finalised.
Arsenal have pursued Gyokeres as the club look to sign an out-and-out goalscorer. Kai Havertz was the club’s leading league scorer last term with just nine goals, as the German and Gabriel Jesus spent long periods out injured.
Gyokeres has scored 97 goals in just 102 games for Sporting over the last two seasons, winning consecutive Primeira Liga titles and leading scorer awards.
The 27-year-old will become Arsenal’s fifth major signing of the summer, following deals for Kepa Arrizabalaga, Christian Norgaard, Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke. A deal is also close for Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera to join the club.
Mosquera and Gyokeres are expected to link up with the squad for their pre-season tour of Asia, with Arsenal in action against AC Milan tomorrow, before facing Newcastle and Tottenham in the Far East.
