On Toronto FC’s first day of pre-season training camp, they stunned reporters by announcing the club has sold Víctor Vázquez to an unnamed Qatari club, pending a medical.
TFC confirmed that, during the off-season, an offer was presented to the player’s agent. Vázquez then told the club about it and that he intended to leave as soon as possible.
The move should be officially announced later this week.
“Gonna miss him. Victor has been a loyal servant to the club, and a fantastic player, and an even better person,” TFC manager Greg Vanney said.
“This opportunity came up for him and his family, and it’s important for him.
“I think it’s something that he’s very committed to, and it’s a long-term thing for him and his family, so we understood, and we came to an agreement.
“I don’t think we’ll find a way to replace Victor exactly, but we’ll find a player or players that will also add to our team in this transition.”
After arriving from Cruz Azul on a Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) deal in 2017, the Barcelona academy graduate led Toronto FC to a rare treble, scoring 10 goals and adding 17 assists in 2017 alone.
Last season, the midfielder scored eight goals and added nine assists in 21 games during an injury-ravaged campaign.
The soon-to-be 32-year-old Vázquez won Belgian Footballer of the Year in 2014 with Club Brugge.
