Toronto FC and Carlos Salcedo have mutually agreed to the termination of the player's MLS contract, the club announced Tuesday.

The center-back's contract will officially end on July 15, when he is expected to return to Mexico with FC Juarez, less than six months after arriving in Canada from Tigres as part of a swap deal that saw winger Yeferson Soteldo go the other way.

Salcedo's departure will open up another Designated Player (DP) spot, meaning TFC will have two slots to use following the sale of Alejandro Pozuelo to Inter Miami last week. The expected signing of Federico Bernardeschi, who will join fellow Italy international Lorenzo Insigne at BMO Field, will fill one spot, but TFC will still have another free to use.

“We’d like to thank Carlos for his efforts during a difficult time,” TFC president Bill Manning said in a club press release. “In the end, Carlos felt it was most important to return to Mexico to be with his wife and children. We fully support Carlos’ decision and wish him the best in the future.”

Toronto FC also recently signed Canada international midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye from the Colorado Rapids as the club undergoes a summer rebuild, with homegrown Ralph Prso heading to Denver as part of the deal.

TFC currently sit 12th in the Eastern Conference, seven points adrift of the MLS Cup Playoff spots with 19 games played.
