According to several reports from Brazilian media, Toronto FC are set to sign 20-year-old Sao Paulo FC goalkeeper Lucas Paes Souza on a one-year loan.
Souza was promoted to SPFC’s first-team this season, however, he failed to make an appearance for the senior side.
Alex Bono has been TFC’s number one goalkeeper for the last two-and-a-half seasons, and starred during their 2017 MLS Cup title run, though he only earned three clean sheets in 27 starts in 2018.
Souza’s arrival likely symbolises the end for back-up goalkeeper Clint Irwin – who makes significantly more money (€195,000) than Bono (€143,000) despite making just 13 MLS appearances over the last two seasons.
This wouldn’t be the first time TFC has done business with SPFC, as right-back Auro appeared 28 times in all competitions and registered six assists for the Canadian outfit in 2018.
Whether or not that deal becomes permanent before the end of the year remains to be seen.
