It was a worry for the medical staff, who warned that an operation would mean he could be on the treatment table for as long as three months.

This evening the club released a statement assuring that after specialist consultation with Professor Giovanni Di Giacomo in Rome, it was decided that Buongiorno will not need to go under the knife.

He will continue conservative treatment for the next few weeks and then see if there is improvement.

Buongiorno is 24 years old and has recently broken into the Italy squad with two senior caps.
