Even before the first game of the season, there was an historical issue at stake. Indeed, Kylian Mbappé (PSG) could equal the record of five consecutive Ligue 1 Uber Eats titles set by Marseille striker Jean-Pierre Papin, crowned top scorer from 1988 to 1992. Record season
While the Parisian striker is still in a good position to join JPP on the list of winners, the ranking of scorers is an unusual one. Never in the 21st century have the top three scorers posted a minimum of 20 units after 32 games in Ligue 1 Uber Eats. Prior to the current season and the performances of Kylian Mbappé, Jonathan David and Alexandre Lacazette, you have to go back to the 1977-78 season to find three players with 20 or more goals at this stage of the season (seven players).
>> Official Ligue 1 Uber Eats scorers chart In the battle for the golden boot, there are many who want to deny Kylian Mbappé (PSG, 23 goals) a fifth consecutive title. Thanks to his goal against Lorient on Sunday (1-3), the PSG No.7 widened the gap ahead of Lille's Jonathan David (21 for the Canadian). Note that Mbappé has five fewer goals scored on penalties than David, a factor that would favour the Parisian in case of a tie. In third place, we find Alexandre Lacazette (OL, 20 goals). Unlike the other contenders, the 31-year-old striker is the only one to have already been named top scorer in Ligue 1 Uber Eats (2014-15). A record density in the 21st century? This is only the fourth time in the 21st century in Ligue 1 Uber Eats that the top three scorers have reached 20 goals each. But with five games left to play (and even six games for some, like Lens' Loïs Openda), other records are within reach this season. If Josip Skoblar's record (44 goals with OM in 1971) seems a bit far off, the record for the greatest number of players with at least 20 goals in the same season in the 21st century is realistic (4 in 2016-17), as is the record for the greatest number of goals scored by the third-placed player, which dates back to the 1981-82 season with Michel Platini (22). Podiums with at least 20 goals in the last 40 years: 2020-21: Kylian Mbappé (PSG) 27 goals, Memphis Depay (OL) 20 goals, Wissam Ben Yedder (ASM) 20 goals 2016-17: Edinson Cavani (PSG) 35 goals, Alexandre Lacazette (OL) 28 goals, Radamel Falcao (ASM) 21 goals, Bafé Gomis (OM) 20 goals 2011-12: Olivier Giroud (MHSC) 21 goals, Nenê (PSG) 21 goals, Eden Hazard (LOSC) 20 goals 1999-00: Sonny Anderson (OL) 23 goals, David Trezeguet (ASM) 22 goals, Marco Simone (ASM) 21 goals 1993-94: Youri Djorkaeff (ASM), Roger Boli (RCL) and Nicolas Ouédec (FCN) 20 goals
