Shola Shoretire joined Bolton Wanderers from Manchester United just after the midway point of the January transfer window with a big reputation at youth level.

This feels like the kind of transfer that the Trotters have been able to complete due to their geographic location more than anything else, with the 19-year-old making it abundantly clear since that he has the ability to be playing above League One level.

Shoretire has not registered a goal contribution in four third tier outings so far, three starts, but his movement, passing ability and vision has been that of a player capable of playing in a higher division.

Former EFL striker Sam Parkin has seen enough in just four league appearances for the Trotters to suggest they have acted very smartly to bring him in.

Parkin explained what he likes about the versatile forward on the What The EFL?! podcast.

He said: “He’s a top player as you would expect from that academy, that game understanding, the awareness, the variety of positions that he’s played already, he’s played in a two and played in the ten at the weekend behind (Dion) Charles and (Victor) Adeboyejo.”

Wanderers are in a strong position to lock down a play-off spot in the coming months, despite Peterborough United’s resurgence under Darren Ferguson, and Shoretire could be a hugely important individual when it comes down to the fine margins of a play-off tie.

The Trotters are a joy to watch under Ian Evatt, they move the ball so intelligently and often at speed, therefore, even though geographic location likely would have come into the decision making, this looks like a terrific choice of landing spot for Shoretire from Manchester United.

The 19-year-old is destined for bigger and better things, but in the short term, excelling in a third tier side that play an exciting brand of attacking football should set him up very well moving into next season.

Shoretire appears to have graduated out of Premier League 2 already and it will be fascinating to see where he is plying his trade next season.
