RB Leipzig forward Christopher Nkunku is said to be ‘happy’ with the ‘proposal’ sent to him by Chelsea ahead of a proposed move in 2023.

It feels pretty likely that we are going to be hearing a lot about Nkunku in the months leading up to the next summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old progressed through the ranks at PSG but he has made his name during his time playing in the Bundesliga. Leipzig paid around €13m plus add-ons to sign him in 2019.

Nkunku enjoyed a breakout season last term as he grabbed 20 goals and 13 assists in 34 outings in the Bundesliga.

The attacker has also hit the ground running this term as he has been involved in nine goals in just twelve outings.

It was only a matter of time before talk of him leaving intensified and he has recently admitted that PSG is his “heart club”:

“Paris, I’ve always said it, it’s my home, my heart club. I don’t close any doors. Everything is possible in football.

“It’s flattering to have the biggest clubs in the world interested in me. But it’s also flattering that Leipzig is doing everything to keep me. We are in June, and I am focused on this gathering [with the French national team].”

Chelsea look to be the favourites to sign him next summer though as it was revealed earlier this week that Nkunku has already completed his medical ahead of a move to Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool have been consistently linked with Nkunku in recent months and it has been claimed that they are ‘far from giving up’.

The Reds may have a chance as Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Chelsea still have “work to do on an agreement”.

But the journalist does note that the Blues are “pushing and leading the race:

“We’ve had a lot of stories about Christopher Nkunku in the last 24-48 hours,” Romano wrote for Caught Offside.

“It’s normal, he’s a top player, and some big clubs are involved, so what’s really going on?

“From what I’m told, Nkunku has had a medical with Chelsea – it was not a personal medical, Chelsea staff were there, and it was for Chelsea Football Club.

“This doesn’t mean it’s a done deal, the medical took place a few weeks ago, and Chelsea have sent a proposal to the player, which he’s happy with. But with RB Leipzig, there is still work to do on an agreement.

“I’m told that Chelsea will try to discuss a fee with Leipzig, before activating the clause in June 2023; so it’s possible they will discuss different price tag or payment terms.

“As of now, Chelsea are pushing and are leading the race, also on the player’s side.”
