Whether Chelsea should stay or leave Stamford Bridge is a contentious issue, but the Blues are hoping to make progress on their stadium plans this summer according to reports.

There’s seemingly been very little progress over the past three years on the stadium front since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took over the club.

There have been rumours about building a new stadium in Earls Court, whilst the other options are to rebuild Stamford Bridge or redevelop it stand by stand.

Chelsea hope to make progress on stadium plans this summer

Boehly has suggested Chelsea could build something new, and it’s likely any new stadium would be multi purpose meaning other sporting events could be held there.

Chelsea face the unique situation where any stadium plans have to be signed off by the Chelsea Pitch Owners, and it’s likely some form of conflict could be brewing between the two parties.

The Blues need a stadium befitting of their status and Stamford Bridge at the very least needs upgrading, but the topic of a new stadium is always going to divide the fan base.

Matt Law has reported in The Telegraph the Blues hope to make progress on their stadium plans in the summer.

Boehly himself has hinted the situation surrounding the stadium could be decisive in the long term future of the club’s ownership.

It’s believed Boehly’s preference is a move to Earls Court, and redeveloping Stamford Bridge presents it’s own problems, and also limits the capacity Chelsea can have.

How possible a move to Earls Court is remains to be seen, with a football stadium not part of the current plans for the land.

If Earls Court isn’t possible then Chelsea could potentially face the prospect of having to play away from Stamford Bridge for a number of years if they decide to knock it down and rebuild it.

The Stadium situation is complex and whatever is decided won’t please everyone, but Chelsea do need to press on with their plans.
