Lazio have had their fair share of signings over the years that have made more of an impact than others. The club spent sizeable sums of money in the past, and some of those additions caught the eye for all the right reasons. BonusCodeBets will take us through the top-five all-time record signings at Lazio based on data provided via Transfermarkt.

1) Hernan Crespo – £48.6m

Crespo signed for Lazio back in 2000 for a fee of £48.6m, which is the all-time transfer record fee that Lazio have ever spent on a player. The Argentine scored 94 goals in four years for Parma, which was a hugely impressive record for any player. He certainly warranted a move to a club of Lazio’s stature, and he continued to catch the eye for all the right reasons.

Crespo scored 48 goals in just 73 appearances for Lazio before he was sold to Inter Milan after Lazio had well-documented financial problems which saw them move on some of their high-profile players. Crespo went on to play for the likes of Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Genoa, before finishing his career back with Parma.

2) Gaizka Mendieta – £41.1m

Mendieta was a player with serious quality, and he moved to Lazio for a fee of just over £40m from Spanish club, Valencia. The Spaniard made 299 appearances for Valencia and was the sixth-most expensive player of all-time when he moved to Lazio in 2001.

The midfielder made 31 appearances for Lazio, as they finished sixth in the Serie A table in his first season with them. That clearly wasn’t enough for Mendieta, who completed a move to the Premier League with Middlesbrough. He spent four years with Middlesbrough, before calling time on his playing career in 2008.

3) Juan Sebastian Veron – £25.7m

Veron’s spell with Lazio was disrupted by off-field problems surrounding his passport, but he made 79 appearances in total for the club after moving to them from Parma for a fee of £25.7m. He chipped in with 14 goals and 22 assists in his time with the club, which can be classed as a successful one.

The midfielder moved to Manchester United after his spell with Lazio, for what was an English transfer record at the time. The Argentine spent time with Chelsea, Estudiantes, and Brandsen later on in his playing career, and is now the chairman of Estudiantes.

4) Christian Vieri – £24.3m

Vieri’s spell with Lazio was a brief one, as he only spent one season with the Italian giants after completing a move to them for a fee of £23.4m from Atletico Madrid. Vieri went on to score 14 goals in 28 appearances for Lazio, before moving to Inter Milan, where he scored 123 goals in 190 appearances for them, which is a much better return than what we saw with Lazio.

The former Italian international played for the likes of AC Milan, Fiorentina, Monaco, Sampdoria, and Atalanta in the later stages of his career, before retiring in 2009 after his second spell with Atalanta.

5) Jaap Stam – £22m

Stam was part of the treble-winning Manchester United team in 1999 and caught the eye with plenty of strong performances for the Red Devils in his three-year stint with the Premier League side. He moved to Lazio from Manchester United in 2001 for a fee of £22m. Stam had a five-month ban while with the Italian side for having a banned steroid in his system after a match, which disrupted his impact on the team.

He made 94 appearances in total for Lazio before moving to AC Milan in 2004, although he ended up calling time on his playing career in 2006 after a spell with Ajax. Stam is currently managing Dutch side DOS Kampen but has been in the dugout for the likes of Reading, Feyenoord, and FC Cincinnati earlier in his managerial career.
