Between 1971 and 1973, Ajax won the European Cup three years in a row, something that was unimaginable a decade earlier playing as a part-time club.

They triumphed with a revolutionary system where players in a specifically designed tactical setup, were completely interchangeable. Total football as it’s finest and one of the greatest sides to ever grace the game.

5. Jari Litmanen – 133 goals

Jari Litmanen had an illustrious career playing for the likes of Barcelona and Liverpool. However, his best days came at Ajax, where he scored 133 goals in 255 games.

Throughout that time, the Finnish striker picked up the following honours:

  • 5x Eredivisie titles
  • 3x Dutch Cups
  • 3x Dutch Super Cups
  • 2x UEFA Super Cups
  • 1x Champions League s
  • 1x Intercontinental Cup

The 1994/95 Champions League win saw a phenomenal Ajax side defeat the likes of Bayern Munich and AC Milan, with Litmanen finishing the second top scorer of the competition, scoring six tournament goals.

4. Marco Van Basten – 152 goals

Marco van Basten was one of the few players to be very loyal in their career. Playing for two clubs, Van Basten tallied a fantastic goalscoring record for AC Milan but most notably for Ajax.

Van Basten went on to win the Balon d’Or three times in four years during his time with AC Milan.

However, he wasn’t shy of trophies at Ajax either, winning:

  • 3x Dutch Cups
  • 1x EUROPAPOKAL DER POKALSIEGER SIEGER

Van Basten also won nine top goalscorer awards, with four of these coming at Ajax.

His best season in an Ajax shirt came in the 1985/86 season when he scored 37 league goals.

3) Ruud Geels – 153 goals

Ruud Geels spent the majority of his career playing in the Eredivisie, with most of his goals coming for Ajax, hitting 132 goals in just 139 games.

Geels dominated the Dutch league in the 70s, with him winning three consecutive top scorer awards in 1974/75, 1975/76 and 1976/77 seasons.

Along with his achievement, he also won a couple of trophies while being a part of the Ajax team:

Geels’ other top scorer awards came in 1977/78 and the 1980/81 campaign.

2) Klaas-Jan Huntelaar – 158 goals

One of the most underrated forwards of all time, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, tallied an incredible goalscoring record during the five years he played at the Johan Cruyff ArenA.

His goals brought success for Ajax, lifting:

  • 2x Eredivisie titles
  • 3x Dutch Cups
  • 2x Dutch Super Cups

During his time at Ajax, Huntelaar won two Eredivisie top scorers in three years, scoring 33 goals in both campaigns.

During his successful career, Huntelaar scored 366 goals in 662 games.

1) Johan Cruyff – 196 goals

Of course it had to be the legendary Johan Cruyff at number one.

The three-time Balon d’Or winner didn’t only cement himself as one of the greatest players of all time, and the greatest product from the Ajax academy.

Cruyff’s time at Ajax was so impactful that after he passed away, Ajax renamed their stadium the Johan Cruyff ArenA.

Cruyff was pivotal in Ajax’s glory days in the 60s and 70s, winning 18 trophies with Ajax which included:

Cruyff went on to score 196 goals in 288 appearances.
