Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray has reportedly held personal talks with Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt as the Black Cats look to beat Championship rivals Middlesbrough to a January deal.

Leeds are set to loan out the young forward this month and there is no shortage of interest in the 20-year-old – with Sunderland and Boro just two of a host of second tier clubs linked already.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Mowbray has held personal talks with Gelhardt recently.

The Sunderland boss’ reputation for developing young players is said to be a factor that could help the Stadium of Light outfit win the race for him this month.

Reports have indicated that the Black Cats are keen to sign two forwards this month – a Premier League loanee that’s ready to make an impact now as well as a young player that can join permanently and take some time to develop.

Gelhardt played his part in helping Leeds avoid relegation from the top flight last season and has been a squad player under Jesse Marsch again this term.

The Verdict

This would be a fantastic addition if the Black Cats can get it over the line.

It sounds as though the deal may not be cheap to do but Gelhardt looks like a player that is ready to hit the ground running in the Championship.

That could be just what Sunderland need to try and sneak into the top six in the first season back in the second tier.

Mowbray could help them get the deal done given his reputation with young players and it seems he’s already met with Gelhardt to discuss the potential move.
